March Madness Leads to…

Posted by Sherry @ 6:39 PM, Wednesday Mar 31st, 2010
As most of the country has been glued to TV sets at home and in sports bars watching the annual event known as March Madness, I can’t help but notice that with all of this ‘hoopla’ (pun intended) it seems that there is a big golf event flying in under the radar. The LPGA’s first major [...] Related posts:

The LPGA Tour heads into its first major of the season, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, this week, and Paige Mackenzie is there. But before Paige headed to California, she headed into the photo studio to do a shoot modeling MiC Sport apparel.

MiC Sport is designed by Melba Lee, who says she shied away from the game for many years due to apparel that was just a little bit too mainstream for her tastes. With a background in high fashion and contemporary women's suits, Melba decided to create MiC as a private label and bring those sensibilities to the golf world.

She describes MiC as smart and sexy, "a collection with an unconventional flair."

"We are continually reminded how incredibly sexy athletic and intelligent women can be," Melba Lee said. Hey, nobody has to tell Golf Babes readers that, right? And Paige is a great model for that, indeed.

Check out the MiC Sport Web site along with the company blog for more info.

Golf Jokes – 25 Irrefutable Laws of Golf

Posted by Dave @ 4:11 PM, Wednesday Mar 31st, 2010

Golf Jokes – 25 Irrefutable Laws of Golf

  1. No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the at the end of the round, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a season and, eventually, a lifetime.
  2. The best round of your life will be followed almost immediately by the worst round of your life. The probability of the this occurrence increases with the number of people you tell about the it.
  3. New golf balls are drawn to water. although this cannot be proven by science, it is a well known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water.
  4. Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down.
  5. No matter what causes a golfer to shank a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant “You looked up,” or invoke the wrath of the golf gods.
  6. The higher a golfer’s handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor.
  7. The older you are, the more likely you are to “play your age.”
  8. Every par-three in the world has a “Napoleon Complex” which equates to a burning desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater the complex.
  9. Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man.
  10. Palm trees eat golf balls.
  11. Depending on your shot, the USGA “ground under repair ruling” can be applied anywhere on the course.
  12. Sand is alive. If it isn’t, how do you explain the way it works against you?
  13. Golf carts always die at the farthest point from the clubhouse.
  14. A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent — or some similar combination.
  15. All 3-woods are demon-possessed.
  16. It NEVER “opens up over there.”
  17. Golf balls from the same “sleeve” tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water.
  18. A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty.
  19. “Nice lag” can usually be translated to “lousy putt.” Similarly, “tough break” can usually be translated “way to miss an easy one, sucker.”
  20. The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you.
  21. The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.
  22. Golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic.
  23. Golf should be given up at least twice per month.
  24. All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset of the same day.
  25. A cart path bounce will NEVER play to your advantage.

Tiger Woods Mistresses article in Vanity Enquirer…err Fair

Posted by Dave @ 2:55 PM, Wednesday Mar 31st, 2010

Over at Good Walk Spoiled, fellow blogger Jeff mentioned that Vanity Fair is running a feature on Tiger Woods’s many mistresses detailing various personal accounts with golf’s #1 man and photo spreads of the ladies.

You can read his take on it here – Vanity Fair’s attempt to screw Tiger during Masters week.

There’s a teaser article about Tiger’s Mistresses up on Vanity Fair’s website. The full article will be included in the April 7th print release of the rag magazine, which coincidentally is one day before Tiger’s opening round at the 2010 Masters.

As if there wasn’t enough pressure, now he’s going to be bombarded with additional criticism regarding his infidelity with the release happening so close to his return to golf.

A commenter on Jeff’s post mentioned that..

“If stores haven’t already done so, they need to move Vanity Fair from the “legitimate magazine” section to the tabloid section, between the National Enquirer and the Star. Trashy.”

I completely agree, hence, this posts title..

Vanity Fair, from my limited exposure, is supposed to be a credible magazine discussing culture, society and politics.

HOW does this article fit into any of those categories?

From my perspective, it doesn’t.. Or at least not without a quite a stretch..

I was beginning to think we were starting to move on, the other day I was in the grocery store at the checkout counter and scanning all the tabloids, not a single mention of Tiger Woods and his mistresses, they had all moved on to Sandra Bullock and Jessie James..

Now, I fear, Vanity Enquirer might have rekindled this nauseating flame and we’re going to be inundated with more personal dirty accounts of Tiger Woods off the course…which could potentially affect his performance ON the course, which is really all we golf fans care about..

Do you think the media frenzy that’s bound to surface due to this article will negatively affect Tiger’s performance at the Masters?

The Long & the Short of the Golf Skirt & Skort

Posted by Patricia @ 2:06 PM, Wednesday Mar 31st, 2010
.At many country clubs the rules on skirt length are quite clear. As in: "Skirts must be no greater than 4 inches above the middle of the kneecap" or how about: "Skirts/skorts must measure at least fourteen (14) inches from the waistband to the bottom of the skort and to within a scorecard width measure or four (4) inches of the top of the knee". OK...gulp. While not all dress code directives

Gratitude Series: Mike Evans

Posted by Shannon Grissom @ 12:03 PM, Wednesday Mar 31st, 2010
This post is part of an ongoing gratitude series celebrating people who've given me a huge creative boost.

Today I am grateful for writer Mike Evans.

For the past eighteen years, I have been passionate about painting. Rain or shine, grief or joy, I have picked up the brush almost daily. Last year I experienced a series challenges that deeply affected my creativity.

And then I caught a breath of fresh air in the form of Mike Evans.

I believe it was Mike's beautiful avatar on Blip.fm, of Sargent's Paul Helleu Sketching with his Wife, that first caught my eye.

Intrigued, I clicked on Mike's link. I was blown away! His blog , Whisper Winds, is magnificent! What a wonderful feast for the senses. There you'll find beautifully poetry and prose, paired with fabulous artwork. The entire site sings! For me, the site is like a mega dose of vitamins for the soul. Hey, click on any one of his works and you'll find something that speaks to you. It's a wonderful way to fill your creative well.

I'll admit I'm particularly fond of the set he wrote around my own art http://storylet.org/category/symphony-of-grass/. I also love the glorious color of Leonid Afremov , and the Cafe Glance series. (I'd be willing to bet that sales of Anna Karenina spiked with each chapter Mike released.)

You can also enjoy him on Twitter. I love how he plays with words, phrases, lyrics and more. His Twitter Profile reads, "...Whisper Wind ... skipping story pebbles across the stream ... enjoy the ripples."

Enjoy the ripples? I certainly do.

Thanks Mike for creating such a beautiful oasis.

Putter Fitting Tips: Swingweight

Posted by PutterZone.com @ 9:30 AM, Wednesday Mar 31st, 2010
The concept of putter swingweight is simple yet complex.

Swingweight is determined by a variety of factors, including the length of the shaft; the weight of the head, shaft and grip; and the manner in which these various components shape the balance point of the club.

Simply put, however, swingweight is the sensation of how light or heavy the putter feels in your hands (in contrast to the actual fixed weight of the club). And because shaft length is the most common fitting variable at the point of purchase, it is the most common variable affecting a putter's swingweight.

To understand swingweight, visualize stabbing an apple with a four-foot spear and swinging it around. Now, chop the spear in half and swing it around. Your sensation of control over the apple will change dramatically. The apple will feel lighter and easier to control at the shorter length. In other words, the apple itself still weighs the same (ie: actual head weight), but the swingweight of the spear has been altered.

Expanding on that example, if you have a 350-gram head on a 33-inch putter, it will feel lighter than if the same 350-gram head were on a 35-inch putter.

Most putter manufacturers, however, don’t account for swingweight differences, using the same head weight for all shaft lengths. That doesn’t mean there is something wrong with one or the other, but it does mean that the different lengths will feel differently in terms of their weighting.

Some manufacturers, however, do offer heavier heads in conjunction with shorter shaft lengths. Also, some putters come with interchangeable weights, which give you options for modifying both the actual weight and the swingweight of the club.

There is no "right" answer to swingweight. It comes down to personal preference, and specifically to how the club feels in your hands and how it fits your stroke.

Generally speaking, the phenomenon of swingweight is simply added reason why you should establish your correct putter length before making a putter purchase. Yes, you can shorten or lengthen a putter after it has been purchased, but this will change the swingweight and thus your relationship to that putter.

P.S. Stay tuned for future entries in the Putter Fitting Tips series. For additional putter fitting insights, consider purchasing PutterZone.com's Ultimate Putter Buyer's Guide.

Shell Houston Open Preview

Posted by Mark @ 8:53 PM, Tuesday Mar 30th, 2010

Shell Houston Open Redstone Tournament Course

They moved to the Humble area in 2003 from The Woodlands and Fred Couples won the first event at the Redstone Golf Club, now they are playing the Tournament Course and the old man is still a contender. To be honest with you I’ve only been on the Tournament Course once for a practice round but they tell me it is long and hard, set up a lot like the Masters with slick greens, and the temperamental weather makes it a difficult week. There have actually been a couple of tournaments cancelled because of rain in the Houston area over the years.

Scheduled the week before the Masters Redstone always draws a strong field and this week a few of the top dogs are missing and my personal favorite to win, J. B. Holmes. For some reason he decided not to play, he was my incoming favorite after the last few weeks and his second place playoff finish last year. This is definitely a course for the long knockers and deft putters. The field has gone fairly deep into the school so it isn’t quite as strong as years past so look out for a long shot.

The caddies will be quenching their thirsts and telling stories at Lloyd’s in downtown Humble where the best men in world have relieved themselves on the bathroom wall. No urinals just a wall with cascading water and a trough below, probably the finest relief station on tour. They take pretty good care of us, some home cooked meals every night, a pool tournament, and the shuffleboard competition gets quite heated, plus the beer is ice cold.

DL III is trying to win his way in to Augusta so watch out for him. My long shots are a couple of rookies, Josh Teater and Blake Adams and look out for Derek Lamely again, he’s still playing pretty good. But, here are the guys to put your money on. Hunter Mahan has a great track record here, Anthony Kim’s ball striking could eat this course a live, and Martin Kaymer’s length will be a great asset.

Houston has always boded well for first time winners. My brother won at the Woodlands with Tony Sills in the early 90’s, first time for both of them. Take a look at the past champions it’s sprinkled with grizzled veterans and first timers. It’s always a fun tournament to watch and the Houston Golf Association does a great job of putting on, and promoting the event.
