Ping Eye2 Wedges are Back!

Ping Eye2 XG Wedge

Hell has frozen over Ping fans. Ping has finally released an updated Eye2 wedge!

Ping Eye2 wedges have enjoyed ridiculously high resale values on sites like eBay for decades after Ping stopped manufacturing them.  Fans of the iconic wedge have been begging Ping to bring back an updated version of the Eye2 for years.  Well, it looks like the company finally listened.

Ping recently announced their new products for 2010 and among them was the Ping Eye2 XG wedge.  According to Golf Wire, here are partial specs and pricing on the new Eye2′s:

EYE2® XG Wedges

The best-selling EYE2® wedges are upgraded with precision-milled, conforming grooves for precise distance control. The EYE2® XG preserves the classic look and performance features of the Tour-proven design while giving golfers the added confidence to play delicate shots around the green, including deep bunker escapes. The perimeter weighting and sole contours optimize forgiveness and playability to ensure versatility from any condition. A non-glare, satin finish provides a high quality appearance.

-Available: SW and LW

-Stock steel shafts: Dynamic Gold® (R300, S300, X100) and KBS Tour™ (R, S & X flexes)
-Stock graphite shaft: TFC 149i (L, SR, R & S flexes)
-U.S. MSRP: $130 per club w/steel shaft; $157.50 per club w/graphite shaft

Kudos to Ping for staying true to the original design.  It looks like the only major differences are the conforming grooves and the satin finish.  Sorry Ping fans, it looks like the popular guyson finish isn’t an option (at least for now).

We expect these to be released in the winter – probably sometime in November.  Can Eye2 XG irons be too far behind?  Hey, a Ping fan can dream, right?

Callaway Diablo Edge Tour – Win With Phil Driver

Posted by Dave @ 3:25 PM, Friday Jul 30th, 2010

A couple months back I wrote about the Win With Phil Free Callaway Driver promotion. This was the promotion where, if Phil Mickelson won the 2010 Masters and you either purchased one of the 2010 Callaway driver (Callaway Diablo Edge, Callaway FT-Tour or Callaway FT-iZ) or if you went into Golfsmith and filled out a free entry form, you would receive that driver for free.

Well, as you know, Phil ended up winning the 2010 Masters and everyone’s favorite golf blogger just received his sweet new driver.

In retrospect, I should’ve probably opted for the regular driver not the 9.5 tour. My slice is bad enough without opening the clubface another degree.. But I digress.

From the company..

Callaway Golf Diablo Edge Tour Driver

Designed to give golfers a distance advantage every time you tee it up.

The Diablo Edge and Diablo Edge Tour Drivers offer superior face technology, a higher MOI, a deeper CG, and better aerodynamics — and it all adds up to the longest, most accurate all-titanium drivers Callaway Golf has ever made.

4-piece Fused Titanium

The use of Fused Titanium in a 4-piece modular design produces the most weight efficient all titanium driver we’ve ever created. Each part is precision-formed and accurately fused together, allowing weight to be positioned optimally, delivering distance-enhancing, penetrating ball flight.

Chemically Milled Hyperbolic Face Cup

A chemical reduction process selectively removes unwanted material from the face cup for precision thickness control, resulting in our most consistently high ball speeds ever.

Aerodynamic Body Design

We’ve reduced drag in the downswing for higher impact speeds by using an Aerodynamic Body Design that refines and optimizes all edge transitions. This reduces drag up to 8% versus other 460cc driver heads.

Standard Shape vs. Tour Shape

Callaway Golf Diablo Edge and Diablo Edge Tour Drivers feature two unique shapes, but all the same technology. Both drivers offer a 4-Piece Fused Titanium Design, a Chemically Milled Hyperbolic Face Cup and an Aerodynamic Body Shape for the longest all-titanium driver we have ever developed.

The standard models feature a core Callaway technology (S2H2), which removes weight from the hosel and repositions it in the perimeter of the golf club for more stability. The Tour models have a full-length hosel, less face progression and an optimized center of gravity that provides the look, feel and performance highly skilled golfers demand.

Aldila Habanero Shaft

The high-performance Aldila Habanero Shaft is engineered as the ideal complement to the Diablo Edge Drivers to deliver incredible feel and performance.

I opted for the 9.5 degree Callaway Golf Diablo Edge Tour driver with the Aldila Habanero regular flex shaft which has a low kickpoint, mid torque and weighs 60 grams. The club has a total weight of 319 grams.

My current gamer is the Cleveland Launcher DST Driver and it’s significantly lighter, having a total weight of 292 grams. It’s an awesome club and the lighter weight makes it easier to get the clubface closed on impact.

Initial impressions of the Callaway Golf Diablo Tour Edge driver are fair. As I predicted,  it’s more difficult to square up the clubface at impact so over the past two rounds, I’ve been hitting some slice-rrific shots.. But when you hit it clean, it’ll go forever. The ball flight is pretty low and it rolls for a mile. I hit a recorded 303 yards with this driver, my longest drive ever..

Stay tuned for a full golf club review.

Best Places to Golf in Hawaii – a man can dream…

Posted by Dave @ 9:48 PM, Thursday Jul 29th, 2010

As many of you know, my wife and I are expecting our third boy, who just today we found out is going to be coming earlier than originally anticipated. The original due date was August 16th, 2010 and now, if she doesn’t give birth by August 10th, they’re going to induce labor. So, after expressing my barely contained excitement to my wife, I hung up the phone and experienced a mild case of pre-third-baby jitters and decided to plan a Hawaii golf trip.

I figure I’ve got a good 10 days before I’ve gotta retire the clubs and I’m gonna go out with a bang!! :)

Hawaii has always been on my bucket list and that desire has increased greatly since I’ve become obsessed with golf. Before it was mainly driven by great weather, beaches and beautiful women. Since golf became a passion of mine it’s now great weather, beaches and golf…. :)

After doing some research and sifting through a bunch of garbage websites, in search of best hawaii golf courses, I’ve come up with a list of the three must play courses in Hawaii. These were consistently listed on legitamate websites on all their “best of the best” lists.

Poipu Bay Golf Course, Kauai

Poipu Bay Golf Course is like no other golf course in the world. This Par 72, 210-acre Robert Trent Jones Jr. design is a links-style course boasting an intimidating 7,034 yards from the back tees. Here, he’s taken nature and the elements to create a stunning and challenging venue.

There’s plenty of wildlife to encounter whilst getting your early morning fix and you’re likely to encounter the native Hawaiian nene geese and witness whales, monk seals, and green sea turtles playing along the shore.

For the past 13 years, this amazing tract has hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. A unique and unforgettable golf experience awaits you on this course, one that demands every aspect of your game and brings it into thrilling focus.

Kapalua

Home of the PGA Mercedes Championship, Kapalua is arguably the best nationally known golf resort in Hawaii. Consistently ranked in Golf Magazines the Top 100 Courses to play, whether it’s the Arnold Palmer designed Bay and Village courses or the Coore & Crenshaw designed Plantation Course, you’ll not be disappointed.

Terraced among silvery-blue pineapple fields above a flawless beach in glamorous west Maui, Kapalua is the only resort in the nation that manages to combine an essentially rural character with world-class sophistication.

The Plantation course, with it’s broad fairways and huge greens is a twisting, topsy-turvy layout where you’ll taste first hand, the brutal nature of Pacific winds. This is a walking only course, that’ll test your patience as well as your endurance and stamina.

The Bay Course is resort golf at it’s finest. It’s a 6,600 yard par 72 course featuring gently rolling fairways and hand-holding generous greens. It’s the older of the two courses and offers a striking contrast to the sweeping vistas and constantly changing elevations of the nearby Kapalua Plantation Course.

The Village Course is an exalted adventure that climbs 800 feet into the fecund mountains. Views of Molokai and other offshore islands from all three courses are outstanding.

Princeville, Hanalei

Another Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, Princeville features two world class championship golf courses, the Prince and Makai. Built into the natural habitat of Kauai’s north shore, these courses offer strategic challenges for golfers of all skill level. These courses have been reciepents of numerous awards and accolate, such as Golf Digest’s #1 course in Hawaii.

The Prince is one of Hawaii’s most challenging golf courses, with a USGA course rating of 75.3 and a 145 slope. Five different tees on each hole allow you to set your own challenge, so even the worst duffer can spend an enjoyable day at this wonderful course.

This 18-hole, par-72 Golf Course climbs slopes and careens down hills as a demanding layout that calls for your best-planned shots. Named for Prince Albert, son of Hawaii’s King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, Golf at the Prince Golf Course is truly a royal experience.

Makai Golf Course was built in 1971 and recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. The Makai Course winds its way around serene lakes, native woodlands and the spectacular coastline with views of Bali Hai and Hanalei Bay. The course plays to a par 72 with four different sets of tees that can be stretched to more than 7,200 yards from the tips.

The recent renovation by Robert Trent Jones Jr. features the introduction of Seashore Paspalum turf grass on to all tees, fairways and greens, providing spectacular playing surfaces for golfers of all skill levels. Additional improvements include the reconfiguring greens complexes and green surrounds, as well as bold reshaping of all bunkers. The signature 7th hole on the Makai Course plays to 213 yards from the back tees. It consists of a challenging tee shot over scenic cliffs, onto to a green which is surrounded by brilliant white bunkers and surreal views of the mountains and Pacific Ocean.

For the casual golfer who wants to enjoy a leisure round of golf with family and friends, Makai Golf Club is also proud to offer the popular 9-hole Woods Course. The Woods Course is a fun and relaxed layout, winding through the native woodlands of Kauai’s north shore.

Alright, so I jest, I’m not really fleeing the impending birth of my child by taking a trip to Hawaii, but, I’d be dishonest if I didn’t say the thought has crossed my mind! However, you, my dear readers can and check out this list of Hawaii tee times.

Also, I’m curious, if you’ve golfed in Hawaii, what are your thoughts on which courses are the best?

Balancing The Heel-Toe Weighted Putter

Posted by PutterZone.com @ 9:04 AM, Thursday Jul 29th, 2010
At PutterZone.com, we have made it our vocation to help demystify the jargon that surrounds putters and putter fitting.

On that note, we noticed a bit of jargon misuse in the latest issue of a major golf magazine: “Last year Oosthuizen wanted a face-balanced Redwood Anser (the club is typically heel-toe balanced), so PING built him one with a Z-band shaft (ie: with no hosel that goes right into the clubhead) to achieve that. Although Oosthuizen used the putter for eight months, including his win earlier this year in Spain, he wanted a long-neck version. PING built the putter (which features a hosel nearly twice as long as on the production model) at its Wrx shop in Phoenix and sent it to Oosthuizen, who put it in the bag two weeks before his win at St. Andrews."

(There is no need to specify the magazine—our intent here is to inform, not embarrass. Nobody’s perfect, including us, and we just see this as yet another opportunity for demystification.)

There are two issues with the aforementioned statement. For starters, there really isn’t such a thing as “heel-toe balanced.” Also, the statement makes it sound like the type of hosel or shaft connection is primarily responsible for the balance of the putter, when it is, in fact, only part of the story.

The Anser putter and other Anser-style putters are heel-toe weighted, not heel-toe balanced. The Anser is heel-toe weighted because the bulk of the head’s weight is located along the heel and toe of the putter (see above photo). No matter how the putter is balanced or how the shaft is connected (hosel or no hosel), the head design itself does not change.

There are two general categories of putter balance—face balanced and toe hang, with the latter falling into varying degrees (click here for a more detailed look into putter balance). What determines a putter’s balance is where the axis of the shaft (ie: where the shaft points) lies in relation to the head’s center of gravity. When the axis of the shaft is in direct line with the head's center of gravity, the putter becomes face balanced.

This is why PING was able to turn Ooshuizen’s heel-toe weighted Anser into a face-balanced putter. By mounting a Z-bend shaft in line with the center of gravity, or by extending the traditional hosel so that the shaft is in line with the center of gravity, you go from toe hang to face balanced.

To review: A heel-toe weighted putter typically has toe hang, but it can also be face balanced. A putter's balance is determined by the axis of the shaft and its relation to the head's center of gravity. And a variety of hosel types and shaft connections can be used to alter the axis of the shaft.
